Domhnall (McCarthy) Mac Cárthaigh Mór is Notable.

Donal IX , King of Desmond from 1558 [1]

Donal MacCarthy Mór was the son of Donal an Drumin (Domhnall an Druiminin) MacCarthy; grandson of Cormac Ladhrach MacCarthy and great grandson of Teige. [2]

He married Honoria, daughter of his brother in law, James, Earl of Desmond.

Domhnall MacCarthy Mór lord of Desmond, was created Earl of Clancare (sometimes written as Clancarthy or Glencare; Clancare being a corrupted form of "Clan Carthy") in the Kingdom of Kerry and Viscount of Valentia by Queen Elizabeth in 1565, as a check against the powerful Geraldines of Desmond. [3]

The Earl of Clancartie was considered a traitor to Queen Elizabeth I in a famous Attainder from 1570, which mentions 15 Irish traitors altogether.[4]

Domhnall's son and heir,[5] the baron of Valentia died in 1585; leaving his daughter Ellen, his only surviving legitimate child. Ellen (Elena) in secret married Florence (Finín or Finghin) MacCarthy Riabhach (MacCarthy Reagh), tanist (heir) of Carbery.

In 1596, "Mac Carthy More died, namely, Donnell, the son of Donnell, son of Cormac Ladhrach, son of Teige; and although he was usually styled Mac Carthy More, he had been honourably created Earl by order of the Sovereign of England." [6]

Of his illegitimate sons (Donal, Dermod, Eoghan), Donal (Domhnall MacCarthy) was unsuccessfully favoured as heir, in opposition to the ambition of Florence MacCarthy and his English supporters.

Verbatim from History of the City & County of Cork:[7]

  • May 1558: The Earl of Desmond's chaplain writes, from London to the Old Earl and Countess, saying he has presented their letters to the Secretary (of State, William) Petre, but has not been introduced to the Queen, or able to deliver the letters brought to him by Thomas Fanning, the tailor, of Youghal. [The chaplain] then adds, that he is going to Flanders or Brabant, to see Cardinal Caraffa, the Pope’s legate, respecting a dispensation for the marriage of their daughter, Onoria, with MacCarthy MoreCardinal Pole, the Queen’s cousin, not having as yet received his powers.
