DO NOT CHANGE PARENTAGE, ADD SPOUSES, OR CHILDREN WITHOUT COLLABORATION!! Jane Bell, also known as Jean McClain, was born about 1735 at Winchester, Virginia. [1] [2] She died on 14 Apr 1815 in Pennsylvania[2] She married John Fraser on 8 Aug 1754 at Winchester (City), Virginia [2]
On October 1, 1755, while returning to her home from the Fort Cumberland trading post several miles away, Jane was captured by Indians and taken to the Miami River near Dayton, Ohio. She eventually escaped and returned 18 months later only to learn that John Fraser, her husband, had remarried because he assumed that she was dead. John Fraser took her back, and he returned his second wife home to her father. Ruby Frazier Frey, a descendant, in 1946 published an historical novel, Red Morning, telling of Jane’s experiences. [3][4][5]
They had the following children:
Jane was removed as administrator of her husband's will on complaint by her children, Margaret, Benjamin and William, who were all over the age of 14 years, that she had not made a full account of John's estate that had been in her hands and that she was likely insolvent.[6] They also asked that they be allowed to choose their own guardians and they all chose Barnard Dougherty, James Piper, and David Espy.[6] Jane had to pay a 200 pound bond to ensure that the rest of the estate was paid over to two sureties that were appointed on behalf of all of the children: Benjamin, Margaret, William, James, Jane, Catherine, Mary, and Amelia.[6]
After the probate of her husband, John Fraser's will, Jane's new husband, Richard Delap received eighty-three pounds and fifteen shillings from his estate.[7] The guardians of her children were released from their guardianship at the same time.[7]
