Biography

John McClanahan Jr. was born on December 8, 1774, in Augusta County, Virginia. He was the son of John McClanahan and Margaret Ann Lewis. His birth came a few months after the death of his father.

Soon thereafter, his widowed mother married Col. William Bowyer and his uncle, Alexander St.Clair, became his guardian. From his father, he inherited the land on which Lewisburg, Virginia was built.[1][2] He was educated at William and Mary College, and was described by Waddell as "a youth of large fortune."

John married Mildred Ann Maupin of Williamsburg, Virginia.[3] They are believed to have had seven children, but only two reached maturity - John Gabriel and Virginia.[1][2]

According to one famiy history, John and family moved to Kentucky about 1807.[1][2] He appears in 1810 heading a household in Bracken County, Kentucky, that also includes his wife, five males under 10, and 2 males 10-15.[4]

John died in 1815 on a trip back to his lands in Lewisburg, Greenbrier, Virginia.[1][2] He was buried at Old Stone Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Lewisburg, Greenbrier, West Virginia.[5]
