Charles McCoy, best known as "Papa Charlie", was one of the major blues accompanists of his time. He was a guitarist and mandolin player. In the 1930s and 1940s he performed together with his brother Kansas Joe McCoy and they recorded as the McCoy Brothers.[1]
Charles was born about 1911 in Jackson, Mississippi.
In the 1920 census Charlie Mccay (age 8) was the son of Alice Mccay [divorced from Pat McCoy], general farmer, in Beat 4, Hinds, Mississippi, with three older siblings and a sister-in-law.[2]
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
In the 1950 census Charles McCoy (age 40), unable to work, was the married lodger of Prince James in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, with wife Beatrice McCoy (age 40).[3]
He passed away 26 Jul 1950 in Chicago, Illinois and was buried in Restvale Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois.[4][5]
