Biography

Anna Barbara has been reported to have been born in 1742 or 1752. It was most likely closer to the 1752 date. Her parents are unknown. Her last name is variably spelled McDuffy, McDuffey or Duffy. Her first name has been seen as Barbara Ann.

She married Johannes Quattlebaum in about 1882 in S. He was a widower with a young son, also named John Quattlebaum. They set up a homestead in Saxe Gotha Township, South Carolina near the current town of Leesburg, Lexington County, South Carolina.

In the 1790 U. S. Census the family was in Edgefield, South Carolina, USA. [1] In this census the age ranges are not well defined John would have been the oldest male and 16 or older. There were two sons under sixteen. The three females were not defined by age.

In the 1800 U. S. Census the family was still in Edgefield. [2] John was in the over 45 years old column. Anna Barbara was in the 26- 44 column making her earliest birth year about 1756. There was only one son at home (George) who was in the 10-15 year age column. There were two daughters between age 10-15.

In the 1810 U. S. Census the family was in Edgefield. [3] John and Anna Barbara were both over 45 years old and there were no children at home. Their son George's family was on the same page. James J. Still's family was on the page also. Two of his children married two of George's children.

Anna Barbara was reported to have died about 1813 in Edgefield, Edgefield County, South Carolina.

Research Notes

Further research is required to locate primary documents to satisfy Wikitree source standards for this information from MyHeritage, family tradition and family books. No actual primary source information seems available about either wife of Johannes (John) Quattlebaum. The only thing I know for sure is that Johannes Quattlebaum had four children. Family tradition says he had two wives and one was Miss McDuffey. I have combined two existing merged profiles that had no credible sources about the identity of his second wife. I have come up with more credible dates and given my reason for those. I would never have added the profile with so little sourcing, but the profile was here so I did my best. Primary sources and changing information to reflect them would be greatly appreciated. Cushing-1054

M. M. Quattlebaum in his book Quattlebaum Family History [5] says that, "Mr. Quattlebaum of Conway, S.C. my co-worker, advises that he has received confirmation of a family tradition which indicates that Johannes married a second time- The story is that Johannes, when his son George was quite young, then a widower, was serving under General Marion in the little Pee Dee section of South Carolina when he met and married a Miss Mc Duffey. It is said that they had their first meal on the bottom side of a wash tub in camp in Little Pee Dee Swamp. Johannes spent one night at the McDuffey home, and found that the Tories were very active in that section. The next day he went back to camp saying that he did not mind fighting an enemy that he could see, but did not care to fight an enemy that prowled at night.

This family tradition would indicate Miss McDuffey was John's second wife and not the mother of George as she is often recorded. The battle between Marion and the Loyalists on the Little Pee Dee Swamp was in June of 1782[6] if they were married about that time and George was born in 1787, George would have been her son. A marriage date of about 1782 also works better with the birth dates of her children which were about 1886, 1887 and 1889.

There is not an agreement on her birthdate (and no primary source) indicating either 1742 or 1752. She was probably born near where she married John in Saxe Gotha Township where John had established a homestead south of the Saluda River and two miles north of the current Leesville, Lexington County, South Carolina [7], [5]

I removed John Gilbert Quattlebaum 1854-1939 as her son because neither she nor her husband would have been alive in 1854, so unless his birth /death years are wrong he could not have been their child.
