Catherine was born in February 1829 in Ross County, Ohio. She was the daughter of James McGinness and Mary Kearn, and lived the early part of her life in Twin Township, Ross, Ohio. In 1850 she was living with her parents and siblings in Roundhead, Hardin County, Ohio.
Catherine married Henry F. Thompson on 31 July 1851 in Hardin County, Ohio. Of their many children five survived beyond childhood: Mary, Frank, Howard, Elizabeth, and Lura.
She passed away in May 1914 in Hardin County, Ohio and is buried in Marysville Cemetery, Hardin County.
