Biography

James McGuire was a miner who was born in Shotts, Lanarkshire, Scotland in about 1823, based on his age at death. He was the son of coal miner Daniel McGuire and Ann Reid.

He married Elizabeth Clarkson at Shotts in about 1845.^[1]

in 1851 the family were living at No. 1 Long Row, Dykehead, (part of the parish of Shotts) with three young children: William, Samuel, and James.^[2]

By 1861 they had moved to No 30 Polkemmet Row, Bathgate, where James was working as an Ironstone miner. They now had a family of eight: William age 15, Samuel 13, James 11, Elizabeth 9, Robert 7, Ann 5, John 3, and Jane 1.^[3]

He died from miner's phthisis at Dykehead (near Shotts) on the 1st of November, 1871.^[4] This was scarring of the lungs caused by inhaling silica dust.
