Biography

Adela Fergus McLean was born on 29 September 1892 at Glanville, South Australia. Her parents were John James McLean and Adela Valentine Cook.[1]

She married Colin Gemmell on 10 December 1913 at the Presbyterian Church in Port Adelaide. She was 21, and he was 23, son of Robert Gemmell.[2] The Presbvterian Church was the scene of another pretty wedding a few days ago when Miss Adela F. McLean, the youngest daughter of Mr. J. McLean, of Semaphore Road, Exeter, was married to Mr. Colin Gemmel, of Broken Hill. The bride looked charming in a rich white pailette silk gown trimmed heavily with embroidery. She carried a beautiful shower bouquet of white blossoms. Miss Naismith, the bridesmaid, looked nice in white silk. She wore a white tulle hat trimmed with forget-me-nots and streamers. She carried a bouquet of pink roses, and wore the bridegroom's gift of gold brooch. Little Miss Jean Caire (niece of the bride) was also in attendance. She wore a white silk frock and carried a crook with pink roses and long ribbon streamers. The bride was given away by her father, and her uncle supported the groom as best man. The reception was held in the Ward Street Hall, which had been charmingly decorated by the bride's friends. The bride's mother wore handsome black silk robe trimmed with insertion with a jetted net vest. Mr. J. McLean acted as M.C. at the informal dance which followed the breakfast. [Port Adelaide News, 9 Jan 1914] “Silver Weddings, Gemmell-Melean, on the 10th of December, 1913, at the Port Adelaide Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. P. Shanks, Adela (Addie) McLean, to Colin Gemmell. Present address. 3 Marlborough avenue. Woodville Estate.” [The Advertiser, Adelaide, 10 Dec 1938]

She passed away about 1950. [unconfirmed] Adela Fergus Gemmell died 17 July 1980, buried at Enfield Memorial Park [Find a Grave]
