At the time of the 1871 census, their family resided at Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.[1]
On January 27, 1879 in British Columbia, 23 year old Charles McNaughton married 16 year old Sarah (or Maryan) Oldershaw. Charles was born in 1856 to Duncan and Jane McNaughton in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Sarah was born about 1863 to Alferd Oldershaw in Chatham, Ontario.[2]
He passed away in New Westminster, British Columbia on 4 Dec 1889.[3] His death was announced in the local newspaper several days later[4]: Capt. C. M. McNaughton, commander of No. 1 Battery, B. C. G. A., died last night, aged 34. He was a popular officer and is much regretted. The body will be buried with military honors to-morrow.
Charles had prepared a will shortly before his death, naming his parents and wife Sarah as beneficiaries; Sarah and Charles' friend Edwin Rand were named as executors.[5] Probate of his estate was completed in 1891.[6]
