James was born around 1773, according to a 1783 list.
His father died in 1779 at the Machiche refugee camp (Yamachiche, Quebec). His mother Eva remarried to John Pencil, and they initially settled in the Niagara area with John's fellow Butler’s Rangers. The family is listed (under the name Pensell) on the 1783 Niagara return: John (45), Mrs. Pensell (31), James (10), Gradus (6), Catherine (14), Sarah (12), and Margrate (4)[1] By 1784 John Pencil and family were in Fredericksburgh Township, near Eva's relatives.[2]
James married Sarah Dingman on 12 Mar 1793 in Fredericksburgh.[3] They moved from Fredericksburgh to Adolphustown by 1803, when Samuel was baptized. An 1803 census records James McNutt living in Adolphustown with a wife and three sons.[4] James is listed in census records for Percy Township from 1804 to 1820.[5] From 1815 to 1818, he was the town clerk. He disappears from the census records after 1820.
Possible death date
An earlier version of this profile had James dying on 7 Sep 1859 in Fredericksburgh. This date comes from the gravestone of a James McNutt (b 20 Sep 1771-d 7 Sep 1859) and Martha Ross (1792-1876) in Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson, Clinton County, Indiana.[6] It is unclear if this is the same James McNutt.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
