Biography

John McPherson was born about 1848 in Dunfermline, Scotland. He was the illegitimate son of Mary Sneddon, who later married Charles Sanders.

In the 1851 census, he lived with his mother Mary, step-father Charles, and baby sister Isabella.[1][2]

In the 1861 census, he was 14 years old and lived in Dunfermline with his parents and siblings and started going by the last name Sanders.[3][4]

In the 1871 census, he was 23 years old and his occupation was miner. He lived with his parents and siblings in Dunfermline.[5][6]

He married Betsy Kennedy, daughter of Duncan Kennedy and Janet Black, on 1 January 1874 in Dunfermline. His occupation was coal miner.[7] They had four children:

  1. Janet Sanders (1874-1938) m. Campbell Fyfe
  2. John Sanders (abt.1879-1900)
  3. Duncan Sanders (1881-1919) (unmarried)
  4. Mary Sanders (1888-____)

In the 1881 census, John was 33 years old and lived in Dunfermline with his wife Betsy, their daughter Janet, and their son John.[8]

He passed away on 19 December 1888 due to an accident while working. He was struck by part of a crane while he was unloading a railway truck. He was about 40 years old.[9][10]
