Biography

Edith was born on 28 Aug 1917 in Algiers, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. She was the daughter of Thomas McRorie (1883-1954) and Edith Eva Watson (1893-1951). [1]

The 1920 Census[2] shows her at age 2 with her mother in the home of her maternal grandparents in Columbia, Boone County, Missouri. Her mother is married, but her father is not present.

The 1930 Census[3] shows her at age 12 in the home of her parents in Columbia, Boone County, Missouri.

The 1940 Census[4] shows her at age 22 in the home of her parents in St. Louis, Missouri. She is a dress designer for a frock manufacturer.

Edith married first to J. Earl Gummels on 25 Nov 1941 in Hillsboro, Jefferson County, Missouri.[5] [6] [7] It does not appear that they had children.

The 1950 Census[8] shows her at age 32 with her husband in the home of her parents in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. She is a tool designer for a tool manufacturer.

J. Earl died in 1955 in California.[9]

Edith married second to Thomas W. Redfield on 19 March 1960 in Los Angeles, California.[10] [11] It does not appear that they had children.

She died on 7 Jan 2011 in Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada.[12] Excerpted from her obituary: [13] [14]

"Edith Eve Redfield, age 93, 22 year resident of Bullhead City, died Monday, January 7, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nev. Edith was born August 28, 1917 in Algiers, LA to Chief Petty Officer Thomas McRorie and Edith Watson McRorie. She attended Sacred Heart Parochial School, Jefferson Junior High and David Hickman High School in Columbia, Miss. as well as the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, Washington University in St. Louis, Miss.

In her early years, she was a dress designer and then a tool designer. A pioneer among women, she became an electrical designer for a well known electrical engineering firm in the Southern California area. Projects included many Long Beach City buildings and churches, the Shoreline Village development and the Marina Pacifica Shopping Center. She belonged to the Illuminating Engineering Society and the International Association of Electrical Inspectors.

Holder of a private pilot's license, Edith belonged to the American Bonanza Society, the Skylarks, and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Edith was a water color and batik artist, a signature member of the National Water Color Society and has had several works in the Long Beach Art Museum and the Las Vegas Art Museum. Edith received numerous awards and exhibited in many juried shows. Edith is named in "Who's Who in Art" and "Women of the World Who's Who"; she is published in two editions of Poetry Collections and was a member of the Famous Poet's Society.

Edith was a former member of the Los Coyotes Country Club in Buena Park, Calif. and of Chaparral Country Club and the CWGA in Bullhead City, Ariz. In recent years, she belonged to the Desert Daisies, the Senior Circle, the Happy Hatters, and a Birthday Luncheon Club.

She was preceded in death by her sister; her parents, and husbands J. Earl Gummels in 1955, and Thomas W. Redfield in 1988.

She is survived by three step-children... and two nieces... and their families, which consist of numerous grandchildren, great nieces, and great nephews." [13]

Special Note: For many years, Edith was the custodian of the McRorie Family Bible, and before her death she passed it on to the family of Chester E. McRorie since he was the last surviving member of the family of James Stewart McRorie with male heirs.
