Biography

Amos Thompson Mead (Amos,Amos,Jonathan,Jonathan,Jonathan,John,William)

Amos was born in Marcellus, Onondaga county, NY in 1823.[1] Amos was the son of Amos Thompson Mead Jr and Ann Purdy.

Amos moved with his parents from Onondaga County NY to Erie County and then to Chautauqua County NY. He grew up on a farm, then spent twenty years working in the newspaper business.

In 1843 Amos began his career in the newspaper business in the office of the Mayville, Sentinel, then to the Erie Observer and the Buffalo Express. In 1847, he began the publication of the Conneautville Courier in Crawford County, PA, with George W. Brown, their first issue was dated November 14, 1847. His newspaper career expanded 20 years.

In 1848 Amos married Achsa Buell the daughter of John B. Buell of Mayville, Chautauqua County New York. Amos and Achsa Buell were married in Mayville, New York. Amos later sold his interest in the Courier to Mr. Brown.

In 1864 Amos returned to farming and cultivation of grapes on his farm in Portland, Chautauqua County New York.

Amos T. Mead and Achsa Buell had six children two of whom died. the remaining children were Addie M, (Married Robert Burhans); Charles A, (Married Minnie E. Hipwell); William B. (Married Ella M. Williams); and Nettie I. all living in the Portland, New York area.
