Biography

Pedro Medrano was born on 18 January 1883 in Matehuala, San Luis Potosi, Mexico to Teodoro Medrano and Cesarea Casares. He married three times, each time because his previous wife had passed away.

He had one son with his first wife, Maria Estefana Martinez[1]; eight children with his second wife, Teresa Rivera; and nine children with his third wife, Pola Rivera.[2] He was a farmer and owned a ranch in Mercedes, Texas.

Pedro died on 7 February 1982.[3] He is buried at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery in Weslaco, Texas.[4]

United States Census History

1930: Pedro is enumerated in the Census as the Head of Household at House Number 23 on Mile 9, Precinct 7, Hidalgo, Texas; they are renting the house (it's listed as a farm). He is listed with his second wife, Teresa, and their 8 children. He was 46 years old and was first married at the age of 22. He immigrated in 1921 and is listed as a resident alien. He speaks Spanish and is not able to speak English; he did not attend school and is not able to read or write. He is employed as a farmer and is working on his own account. The family does not own a radio.[5]
1940: Pedro is enumerated in the Census as the Head of Household at 210 Libertad Street in Weslaco, Hidalgo, Texas; he owns the house. His children, two daughters-in-law, and two grandchildren live with him. He is widowed and 55 years old. He is listed as a resident alien and is working on his own account as a farmer.[6]

Obituary

Pedro Medrano, 101, of Mile 11 north and Mile 1 1/2 west died at 10 a.m. Sunday at the residence. The native of Mexico had been a resident of the Mid-Valley for 60 years and of the Mercedes area for 10 years. Funeral mass was said at 3 p.m. today in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial was in Highland Memorial Park under direction of Garza and Llewellyn Funeral Home of Weslaco. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Pola Medrano; six sons [names redacted]; and eight daughters [names redacted]. There are 46 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren surviving.

Research Notes

There are discrepancies between the date of birth on his headstone and records. There is a birth record that states his date of birth as 18 January 1883.[7] The World War II draft registration lists his birthday as 30 March 1882.[8] The Social Security Death Index lists his birthday as 29 June 1885.[9]
