Thomas Merritt is/was a significant Ontarian .
Thomas R. Merritt was a St. Catharines, Ontario, businessman and politician. He served as a town councillor for St. Thomas’s Ward in St. Catharines from 1857 to 1859. In 1868 he was elected as M.P. for Lincoln and was returned in the general election of 1872. He retired in 1874.

He was the youngest son of William Merritt and Catharine Prendergast. In 1853 he married Mary Benson; they had no children.

He was educated at Upper Canada College in Toronto in 1837–38 and at Grantham Academy in St Catharines in 1838–39.
