Biography

Andrew Miller was born in North Carolina in 1780. In 1801 he was issued a pass by Indian Agent Return Meigs to travel in the Cherokee Nation. [1] He married a Cherokee woman named Catherine McCoy about 1807. They had seven children including Avery, [2] Elizabeth, Alfred, Isabelle, Elmira, Lucinda, and Andrew Jr. [3] Andrew took a reservation “in right of his wife” under the treaty of 1817, listing a family of eight persons. [4] "They lived in Tennessee until Andrew was murdered in 1818 by William Maney. In August of 1818 Andrew Miller Sr attempted to break up a fight between a Cherokee named the Eel and a white man named William Maney and Andrew was killed by Maney. This story was recounted by Andrew's nephew, David Taylor, to John Chapman in 1855 and was part of the testimony collected by Chapman concerning the disputed Cherokee lineage of the Maney family." [5] Catherine and the children returned to live with her family after Andrew's murder. [6]
