Biography

Born about 1774, possibly Saxony, Germany. (Note that his War of 1812 enlistment record says he was born at Berks or Bucks County, Pennsylvania.)[1][2][3]

Parents Conrad Menges and Mary Boovy. [2]

Immigration: 1792 from Saxony, Germany.[1]

Marriage Husband John Jacob Mingus. Wife Sarah Angaline Riker.

Census 1800 04 AUG 1800. Jacob Minges was enumerated as a head of household on the 1800 Federal Census in Lincoln County, NC. Based on known or estimated ages, it is possible that the following were also living in the household: Ephraim Mingus, John Jacob Mingus Jr and John Mingus, free white male under the age of ten; Mary Elizabeth Mingus, free white female under the age of ten.[4]

Census 1810 06 AUG 1810. Haywood, NC, USA. Jacob Minges was enumerated as a head of household on the 1810 Federal Census in Haywood County, NC. Based on known or estimated ages, it is likely that the household included Sarah and their children.[5]

Military, 20 MAR 1814. Waynesville, Haywood, NC, USA. Note: during the War of 1812, as a private,||He was a member of Captain Robert Love's company at Camp Federal Point, in the 43rd U.S. Infantry. He was appointed Sergeant on 15 Aug 1814. Jacob was described as 5 feet 10 inches tall, with blue eyes, dark hair, and fair complexion. His enlistment term was for five years, but he was discharged early on 17 May 1816 at Camp Greenfield, NC. Jacob was awarded bounty land warrant #27056-160-12 for his service.[6][3]

Census 1820 07 AUG 1820. Jacob Mingous was enumerated as the head of a household on the 1820 Federal Census in Haywood County, NC. Based on known or estimated ages, it is possible that the following also lived in the household: John Jacob Mingus Jr and John Mingus, free white male 16 to 26 years old; Sarah Angaline Riker, free white female over 45 years of age. In addition, an unidentified free white male age 10-15 is in the household.[7]

Census 1830 01 JUN 1830. Haywood, NC, USA. Note: He was enumerated as the head of a household on the 1830 census in Haywood, NC. He is undoubtedly the free white male aged 50 to 60 in the household. There is also a free white female aged 5 to 10 years of age (possibly a grandchild), and a free white female aged 70 to 80 (identity unknown; his mother was long gone by 1830). There is a household for John Mingus (probably aged 30 to 40) shown 4 entries earlier on the same census page whose identity is uncertain, but may be his son [Dr.] John.[8]

Census 1840 01 JUN 1840. Haywood, NC, USA. Jacob Mingoes appeared on the 1840 census in Haywood County, NC. This appears to be the household of Jacob Sr. with his wife, at least one of his grown children with spouse[s], and probably some grandchildren and others. [9]

Died probably before 1850 in North Carolina.[10]

Buried Mingus Cemetery, Smoky Mountain National Park, Swain, NC, USA. Note: According to family tradition, he was buried in the Mingus Cemetery in an unmarked grave. Only one of the graves in this burial ground is identified, the others marked only with large stones.[11]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
