Biography

Roll of Honor
Pvt Marshall Mitchell Died while a Prisoner of War during the United States Civil War.

Marshall was born in 1831, the son of Abijah Mitchell and Mary Wells. He was the twin of Madison Murry Mitchell.

Marshall enlisted as a Private on 8 Oct 1862 in McMinnville, Tennessee, in Co B (Clack’s) 3rd Tennessee Infantry. He was captured during retreat from Missionary Ridge, sent to Rock Island Prison, and died there of disease. The story passed down was that the family did not know his fate.

He was buried in the Rock Island Confederate Cemetery located in Rock Island, Rock Island County, Illinois,[1]

M. M. Mitchell vs. William T. Carter
Marshal M. Mitchell & wife Nancy Jane in their Bill alleged that Merry Carter, the father of the said Nancy J. conveyed to her by Deed of Gift a negro woman Celia and her boy Edmund, that said Celia had six children, viz: Edmund, Martha, May, Amand, Della & Ben. At the sale of her father's property she purchased a negro boy Ben and that said negroes were in possession of said William T. Carter, who threatened to hire out negroes for the next year and refused to give them up. Mitchell & wife brought Attachment A & Injunction Bill against Carter. Arthur, the husband of Celia was purchased of Eber Compton. A family dispute over slaves. These people were summoned to testify: E.B. Brown, Matilda Brown, William A. Tarpley, James M. Carter, William S. Cardwell, Maria P. Cardwell, William P. Wood, Christian Bringle, and Alexander Tinnon, Albert Buford, Newton White Arbitrators. So much of this case is missing."
