Biography

Joseph P. Moats, son of Jacob and Susannah (Garey) Moats, was born in Washington County, Maryland about 1792. After his widowed mother's death in 1842, he moved to Clinton County, Ohio and later to Chestnut Township of Knox County, Illinois. He is found in the 1850 through 1870 census as follows ...

The census states also that Joseph owned $10,600 in real property and $1,200 in personal property while James and Josephas owned only $2,100 and $1,900, respectively, in personal property. While Joseph obviously was retired, having no occupation listed, it is also obvious that he owned the home in which the family was living.^[3]

Joseph P. Moats died apparently sometime between 1870 and 1880. In the latter year's census, four of his grown children were still living together, along with a daughter-in-law and several grandchildren, but Joseph himself is nowhere to be found. He would have been 87 if still living in 1880.
