Sarah (Monk) Chandler was born in Middlesex, England.
Sarah Monk was born in about 1856 in Middlesex, England[1][2], most likely in the areas of Marylebone or Paddington. Her parents were George Monk and Sarah Monk (nee unknown).
At the 1871 Census[3], Sarah lived on 22 Bridge Street in Bermondsey, St Olave Southwark, London, Surrey, England with her parents, George and Sarah, both 39 years old. She was 16 and attending school. Her father was a carman, and his birthplace was listed as 'Ireland'. Her mother's birthplace was recorded as 'Paddington, Middlesex'.
Sarah married Amos Chandler on the 4th of September 1871 in Christchurch, Southwark, London, England[4][5].
They had 3 children together:
Emily Ellen Chandler, born on the 8th of August 1872 in St Saviour Southwark, London, Surrey, England.
Sarah appeared with her husband on the 1881 Census[1] living on 34 Ruby Street in Camberwell, London, England with their children, Emily, Amos, and George. Her husband, Amos, was a carman. Her two eldest children, Emily and Amos, were attending school.
At the 1891 Census[2], the family was living on 16 Alexander Street in Camberwell, London, England. Amos snr. was a gas labourer, Emily was a tin worker, Amos jnr. was a carman, and George was attending school.
At the 1901 Census[6], Sarah, now widowed, lived on 99 Lower Park Road in Camberwell, London, England. She was iving with her son, George, and his family. This included his wife, Margaret, and their young daughter, Clara. George's occupation was 'carman general'.
Research Notes
A birth record has not yet be found/confirmed.
There is a Sarah Monk with a birth registration in Poplar in 1856[7][8] but this is probably not her as Sarah Monk born in Poplar was a servant in the 1881 Census[9]
Census records prior to 1871 have not yet been found/confirmed.
Her parents potentially lived on the same street as her on the 1881 Census. A George and a Sarah Monk were recorded living on 32 Ruby Street, Camberwell, London, England[10]. George was a carman, as he had been on the previous census. Sarah's birthplace was the same, but the George's was now recorded as 'Weybridge, Sussex'. Also, they were both listed as 46 years old, as opposed to the expected 49 based on the previous census. Despite these discrepancies, it is likely that these are indeed her parents.
Unsure whether she appeared on the 1911 census, probably not as no promising results turn up on in depth searches on FamilySearch or FindMyPast.
Death record has not yet been found/confirmed.
