Jacob Montgomery, who was born 03 Apr 1833, is listed in the Gillaspy-Montgomery files, which can be found in the Scott County, Indiana library without a wife, but with a daughter, Rose Montgomery, who married Calvin Benham. This is the Jacob Montgomery who is buried in the Fouts-Robinson cemetery, in a plot that was far removed from the other Montgomerys, but adjacent to the grave of George W. Montgomery, the son of David and Elizabeth, who was killed in the Civil War in 1861. Jacob's gravestone was a large rock upon which no dates were inscribed, but his death certificate states that he died on 14 September 1916. The Montgomery portion of the cemetery includes adjacent graves for Susan C. Montgomery, "wife of Jacob," and Amanda I. Montgomery, "daughter of Jacob and Susan C." Jacob Montgomery married Susan C. Taff in Scott County, Indiana on April 15, 1862. According to Susan's marker, she was born April 23, 1846 and died March 9, 1870, at age 24. Daughter Amanda I. Montgomery was born May 9, 1865 and she died September 29, 1872, at age 7. Daughter, Rose, was born, 24 Dec 1869 and died 02 Oct 1939. She is buried in Mount Zion Cemetery, Paynesville, Jefferson County Indiana. Her Find A Grave memorial number is 88886352. Jacob was living, apparently, on May 28, 1877, when he sold 100 acres in Section 20, undoubtedly inherited from his father, to Jno H. Dickey, his brother-in-law.
After Susan Taff died, Jacob married Phoebe Washer in Jefferson County on 15 Jul 1880. She is sister of Alice Washer who married Jacob's cousin Thomas L. Montgomery (son of David). They had a son, Ira B. born 08 Jul 1887 and died 18 Aug 1903 at age 16. His death certificate states that he died from heart valve disease, but does not list his burial site.
In the 1900 census, there is a Jacob Montgomery in Lexington Township of Scott County. He is the correct age, listing his birthday as April 1833. He says his father was born in Indiana, and his Mother was born in Ohio. While Catherine Baker lists her birth state as PA in 1850 and 1860, her children seemed to have listed her birth state as OH. He is with daughter Rose and son-in-law Calvin in 1910 and lists his mother as born in OH.
