Sarah was born in 1873 in Kentucky. Her mother was Mary Ann Wells and her father was Milton or Melton Moon. [1]. (Note that most trees on Ancestry.com give incorrect parents for her. Her parents names are listed on her death certificate.)
Her father must have died before 1880, as her mother is listed as "widowed" on the 1880 Census. At that time, Sarah and her mother Mary and younger brother John were living in the household of her maternal grandfather William Wells.[2]
She married William Isom Hayes on November 5, 1890 in Missouri.[3] They moved to Fort Worth, Texas sometime between then and the birth of their first child William Henry Hayes.
In 1900[4] they seem to have been living in Fannin County, Texas. William was working as a farmer. They had their eldest son, William Henry, and a four month old daughter named Rosie who seems to have passed away before the 1910 census.
In 1910 she was living on 506 Clover Street in Fort Worth, Texas with her husband and children. [5] William was working as a farm laborer and Sarah was doing sewing at home.
