Biography

1776 Project
Pvt. Obadiah Moore Jr. served with Pitt County Regiment, North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.

Obadiah More/Moore, Jr. was born in 1754 in Princess Anne County, Virginia. Obadiah Moore Jr. was the son of Obadiah Moore Sr. and Prudence Willoughby. He died on Sep 20, 1839 in Autauga County, Alabama, USA.[1]

He married Winny/Ventis Venters (about 1762-after 1850) on Dec 31, 1782 in Pitt County, North Carolina. Winny was born after 1762 in South Carolina and died after 1850 in Chestnut Creek Beat, Autauga County, Alabama.[2]

Military Service

Obadiah was a Pvt. in Revolutionary War in the North Carolina Militia. In 1780, Obadiah was at the Siege of Charleston under General Benjamin Lincoln and captured by the British when the city fell to the English. He was enrolled as a pensioner on Jan 4, 1833.[3]

1779-1780, a Private under Capt. George Faulkner, attached to Col. John Sheppard (Wayne County Regiment). In Charleston, SC erecting breastworks, etc., discharged before the town surrendered. 1780, also a Private under Capt. William Brock and Col. John Simpson. Born in Prince Anne County, VA.[4]

Obadiah, meaning "Child of God" was a common name in that era, was styled variously as More/Moor/Moore. There are two listed in the Pitt County, North Carolina 1790 US Federal Census, one is this man, the other is much richer person and not a relative.

Obadiah was buried in the Moore Family Cemetery, near Cooper, Chilton County, Alabama. The cemetery is located on John Moore's old Homeplace, which is not a public cemetery. Today that land his owned by descendants and is an Alabama Historical Landmark.[5]

Children

  1.  Jesse Moore
  2.  Laodecia Dicey Moore Ray (1791 - 1880)
  3.  John Moore (1792 - 1870)
  4.  Levi Lewis Moore (1802 - 1888)

Obadiah and Winney moved from North Carolina to Georgia immediately upon their marriage, and then later, in 1819, to Alabama. None of their five children were born in North Carolina.

Research Notes

There are many major errors on Ancestry.com about this man. This family never lived in Prince William County, and Prudence Willoughby was never named "Penna" pr "Penina." They had a granddaughter named Penelope, who was nicknamed Penna or Penelope; but it was NEVER part of Prudence Willoughby's name. There are baptism documents establishing Prudence Willoughby's birth in Chislehurst, Kent, England. Descendants were told this More/Moor/Moore family had NO close kin in Virginia or Colonial America, and a paternal DNA test verified this statement. The genealogy from Cynthia Smith Deal[6] also connects descendants of Obadiah that are incorrect but is sourced here because some of the genealogy prior to Obadiah may be correct.[7]
