Excerpt from "A Moorhead/Morehead Genealogy" [1]

Samuel Moorhead, b 5 August 1798, Derry Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA; d 14 July 1885, Biglick Twp., Hancock Co; entered tract in Portage Twp., Hancock Co. 19 August 1833, and settled in the spring of 1834. Elected elder, Findlay First Presbyterian Church, November 1835.
He lost his sight the last several years of his life. As with brother John, he, too, was cited for his physical attributes. He m 5 June 1823, Mary Edgar,27 b 25 July 1792, Cabarrus Co., NC, d 26 January 1853, Portage Twp. Both Samuel and Mary bur Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Much effort has failed to uncover the parentage and ancestry of Mary Edgar. Mary must have been related to her father-in-law's third wife, perhaps a sister. Certainly, the Edgar family who settled early in Fawn Twp., York Co., PA is involved. Two brothers of this family, Hugh and Adam, moved to Mecklenberg Co., NC in that portion which later became Cabarrus Co. Before 1800, they moved to the Cross Creek region of Washington Co., PA, joining a brother James who was prominent in religious and civic activities. James was an elder of the Cross Creek Presbyterian Church, and Hugh became an elder, too, after his arrival. The Newman Creek Presbyterian Church records show that a William Edgar was elected to serve as an elder at its organization in 1814. Shortly after, Hugh arrived from Washington Co., and he, too, was received into that office. The church records indicate that Hugh d in 1832. The author believes that Hugh Edgar is a probable father of Mary, but proof is lacking.
Children of Samuel Moorhead and Mary Edgar:
  1. John Edgar, b 30 June 1824.
  2. Martha Jane, b 6 December 1825.
