Biography

Margaret Morris was born in 1843 in Bradshaw, Lancashire, England to John Morris and Esther (Dearden) Morris. Her birth was registered in Bolton, Lancashire in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Dearden.[1]

In 1851 Margaret Maris (age 6, Scholar) lived in Bradshaw with her father John (39, Carter), mother Esther (41, Carters Wife), sister Mary (12, Hocker Of Cotton Goods), brother John (2), and grandfather James Dearden (36[~66], Weaver Of Cotton).[2]

In 1861 Margaret Morris (age 18, Cotton Factory Worker) lived at Bradshaw Chapel in Bradshaw with her father John (58, Carter), mother Esther (53), sister Mary (22, Cotton Weaver), brother John (13, Cotton Weaver), and grandfather James Dearden (75, Gentleman).[3]

Margaret Morris married Arthur Lowe in 1864. The marriage was registered in Bolton in the second quarter of the year.[4]

Margaret and Arthur had one son:

  1. Arthur John Lowe (1866-1946) [aka Arthur John Kay, as he used his stepfather's name on some census records]

Margaret's husband Arthur Lowe passed away in 1865, shortly before the birth of their son.

Margaret Lowe married James Kay in 1869. The marriage was registered in Bolton in the third quarter of the year.[5]

James was a widower, with one living daughter from his first marriage, Sarah Ann Kay (1862-).

Margaret and James had six children:

In 1871 Margaret Kay (age 28) lived at 12 Long Row in Sharples, Lancashire with her husband James (38, Carder), stepdaughter Sarah A (9, Scholar), son Arthur J (5, Scholar), and daughter Alice (1).[12]

In 1881 Margaret Kay (age 39) lived at 9 Brindley St in Little Bolton, Lancashire with her husband James (48, Cotton Carder), stepdaughter Sarah A (19, Weaver), and seven children: Arthur I (15, Cotton Operative), Alice (11, Scholar), James (9, Scholar), Herbert (7, Scholar), Edward (5, Scholar), Kezia (2), and Margaret (0).[13]

In 1891 Margaret Kay (age 48) lived at 40 West Street in Sharples with her husband James (58, Retired Cotton Carder), stepdaughter Sarah A (29, Cotton Weaver), and seven children: Arthur J (25, Cotton Carder), Alice (21, Cotton Thread Winder), James (19, Cotton Card Grinder), Herbert (17, Steel Spindle Maker), Edward (15, Shop Assistant), Kezia (12, Scholar), and Margaret (10, Scholar).[14]


Research Notes

  • Margaret seems to have passed away before the 1901 census - there are two potential matches for her death registration, one in 1893 (last quarter of the year, aged 51 years) and the other in 1895 (first quarter, aged 52 years). Most likely she is the one who died in 1893, as her husband's probate record from 1894 lists their son and not her as the beneficiary.
  • Margaret's husband passed away in 1894: "KAY James of 40 West-street Sharples near Bolton Lancashire carder in a cotton mill died 22 October 1894 Probate Manchester 26 November to James Kay cotton operative Effects £402 5s."[15]
  • GRO has been checked for any children born with the Surname Kay and mother's maiden name Morris between 1869-1885. The filter for "Similar Names" was selected to catch spelling errors
