Research warning

There were two men named Edward Mumford, one in Baltimore and one in Gloucester Co VA. It is a fairly common mistake to assume they were the same man. This is the "Name's the Same" fallacy.

Biography

Edward Mumford[1][2]

Edward Mumford and wife Ann were in Baltimore Co by 1675.[2]
On 17 Oct 1716 Edward and Ann Mumford conveyed 100 acres Success (part of Burman's Forest) to Henry Peregoy; on 3 April 1728 Henry and wife Amy conveyed 50 acres Green's Purchase (part of Success, which was part of Burman's Forest) to Robert Green; on 2 Sept 1729 Henry and Amy conveyed 50 acres Success to John Miller; Pat. Henry's Delight in Amy's Garden on 1 May 1743, and sold 20 acres of this to Thomas Sligh on 18 April 1749.

Research Notes

The Clark book gives dates Mumford bought and sold land, plus his name on a tax list in 1692, and his probable son's name in 1714 with son-in-law Joseph Peregoy.[1]

Thomas F. O'Connell says Edward's father was Thomas Mumford, b 1580, and his wife was Mary Watkins (b 1650), daughter of Joseph Watkins (b ca 1620) and Elizabeth (--) (Stafford) Purnell. Joseph was son of Richard and Mary (Stoakes) Watkins.

Genforum has this Virginia family: I am interested in your Edward Mumford, but also am stumped as to where he came from. I believe that my line is somehow connected to him because his daughter married a DeJarnette, and in an old, undated affidavit of a distant relative of mine, she refers to the Mumfords and DeJarnettes and said they were of Huguenot blood -- which is true with regard to the DeJarnette family. Unfortunately, she knew nothing more than their last name. I've researched Edward Mumford (I've learned that the name appears to alter in its spelling), and the earliest record of anyone close to his description is that of "Edward Mountfort," who immigrated to Virginia on the ship, Thomas and John. The date was June 6, 1635. He was listed as having been 20 years old. This may have been the "Edward Mumford" who eventually settled in Gloucester County and later Warwick County. It is said Edward Mumford was also a landowner in York County. You have probably done quite a bit of research on the man, so you may have located the early colonial Gloucester County, VA land deed of Edward (9-25-1679), as well as the 11-22-1682 deed. But as far as where he came from, I have been unsuccessful in learning that fact. I show his wife as Mary Watkins and children were Mary, Edward, Joseph and Daniel, and that he died in 1690. The death year is consistent with someone having been born circa 1615, but if it is him, he apparently had children late in life.

Detached Profile: Wilford Mumford (1620-1672), detached as father. Text on his profile, citing a FamilySearch tree, lists a son Edward (1650–1694).[3] Sources attached to the entry for Edward are for Edward Mumford of Massachusetts, but the biography posted for him says "He married Mary Sarah Watkins in 1671, in Baltimore, Maryland, British Colonial America. They were the parents of at least 7 sons and 2 daughters. He died in 1694, in Baltimore, Maryland, British Colonial America, at the age of 44, and was buried in White Marsh, Gloucester, Virginia, British Colonial America."[4]

Mumford-252 and Mumford-48 appear to represent the same person because: text on Mumford-252 and children attached to Mumford-48 would support that these profiles are intended to represent the same person. Please merge if you agree. Thanks!

Very Confusing, this bio list Edwards wife as Ann twice and Mary once. It is possible that Mary (Mumford) DeJarnette is not a daughter of this family see Wm. & Mary Quarterly Vol. XXV pg. 268
Edward Mumford-48 seems to be the son of Edward Mumford-91, and Mary Watkins seems to be this Edward's mother, not his wife.

Andrew - see the text at Mumford-48... says Mary Watkins was Edward's wife. Cheers, Liz

There's a disconnect in dates between this Edward and Mumford-48 that made me think they were father and son. But Mary Watkins, if the 1650 birth year is correct, would have been of an age for the other Edward (born 1646), not this one. That's why I made the unmerged match. Either one of the Edwards' dates are wrong or one wasn't married to Mary Watkins.
