Biography

Mary Murfyn was a daughter of Thomas Murfyn, Alderman of London, and his first wife, Alice (surname uncertain).[1][2][3][4][5]

Her date and place of birth are unknown. Given that she was married prior to 02 Sep 1523[1] her birth may have been in the period 1495-1510. Her place of birth was most likely London.

Marriage

Mary was the first wife of Andew Judde, son of John Judde and Margaret Chiche.[1][3][6]

In the will of her father Thomas Murfyn, the will made on 02 Sep 1523 and proved on 15 Oct 1523[1], Mary was bequeathed a property in Down, Kent. As the Testator also made reference to his son in law Andrew Judde, Mary must have married Andrew Judde prior to the will being made. The date and place of the marriage are unknown but the marriage most likely took place in London.

In the will of her brother Edward Murfyn, Citizen and Skinner of London, his will made on 03 Mar 1527/1528 and proved on 11 May 1528[7] he made bequests to his brother in law Andrew Judde and "to my sister his wife".

Children

  • John Judde (born c1527, died c1559)[3][8][9]
  • Alice Judde (born c1533, died 1593; married Thomas Smythe Esq.)[10][11][12]
  • Richard Judde (born c1536; died unknown)[3][8][13]
  • son (name unknown, presumed to have died as a child)[6]
  • son (name unknown, presumed to have died as a child)[6]

As indicated on the monument to her husband Sir Andrew Judde in the church of St Helen Bishopsgate, City of London[6], Mary and Andrew Judde had five children:

"Three wyves he had one was Mary fower suns one mayde had he by her".

Of the sons, two are depicted in the monument as children suggesting they died before reaching adulthood, their names are unknown. The two sons depicted as adults were not named in the monument but were John Judde and Richard Judde. They followed their father into the Company of Skinners. The Traverse of the Inquisition of John Judde in 1561-1562 recorded that Mary was the mother of Richard Judde (and thus presumably the mother of his elder brother John Judde).[3]

The daughter, also not named in the monument, was Alice Judde who married Thomas 'Customer' Smythe.

John, Richard and Alice survived their mother.

Death

The date of death of Mary is unknown. Her daughter Alice Judde was born around 1532/1533 and her son Richard Judde about 1536. Sir Andrew Judde's second wife, Agnes/Annys, is assumed to be the Agnes Judde admitted to the Skinners at the Feast of Corpus Christi in 1542.[14] Hence, it is assumed that Mary (Murfyn) Judde died at some point between 1536 and 1542.
