Biography
He was born as Charles Edward Myers on 30 May 1928 in Akron, Ohio, USA. [1]
His autobiography uses one of his numerous fake I.D.s. for "Edward Wayne Edwards" born on 14 June 1933. [2]
When he was 5 years old, his mother tried to kill herself in front of him.
In 1940 he was sent to the Parmadale Catholic Orphanage (closed in 1980s). He later claimed that he was abused both physically and emotionally by the nuns there.
In 1944 he was returned to his grandmother.
In 1948 he was sent to reform school in Pennsylvania. He was allowed out of juvenile detention to join the U.S. Marines. He went AWOL from Camp LeJeune in North Carolina, USA and was arrested in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. He was dishonorably discharged from the Marines.
During his 20s and 30s, he traveled frequently, working assorted jobs such as a ship docker, vacuum cleaner retailer and handyman.
In April 1952 he was sentenced (for impersonating a Marine and interstate transportation of a stolen car) to a federal reformatory in Chillicothe, Ohio, USA for two years.
On 09 March 1955 he was arrested for burglary and escaped from the courtroom.
While being held on burglary charges, he escaped from jail in Akron, Ohio, USA on 07 April 1955 and fled across the country, holding up gas stations.
In October 1955 he murdered his 17 year old wife Verna.
After a series of armed robberies, he was apprehended in 1956 in Montana, USA and sentenced to Deer Lodge penitentiary there.
In July 1959 he was released in Montana, USA and taken to Portland to stand trial for two armed robberies in 1956. He was sentenced to five years of probation.
He was arrested for turning in a false fire alarm and in 1960 he broke out of jail in Portland.
On 10 Nov 1961 he was placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. A federal warrant charged him with unlawful interstate flight to avoid confinement after a robbery conviction.
In January 1962 he was arrested by Detective L. N. Bradley, at an apartment with his wife, Marlene Harmon, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
He was a convicted American serial killer and on 18 May 1962 he was sentenced to 16 years in Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary in Kansas, USA.
In 1967 he was transferred to Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary in Pennsylvania and was paroled.
He married on 20 July 1968 in Akron, Ohio to Kay Hedderley.
He was a reformed motivational speaker.
In 1972 he wrote an autobiography, "The Metamorphosis of a Criminal: The True Life Story of Ed Edwards".
In October 1972, he appeared on the television game show "To Tell The Truth", claiming to be reformed and denying any murders.
Between 1974 and 2009, he lived in more than a dozen different states, using many false names.
Between 1977 and 1996 he murdered at least five people and is suspected of several additional killings.
In September 1980 he left Wisconsin, USA.
By 1982 he had returned to crime, and was imprisoned in Pennsylvania, USA for two years for arson.
In July 1986 he was released from prison in Pennsylvania, USA.
On 09 July 1993 he wrote a 3 page letter to the FBI, admitting committing crimes in 19 cities. This letter was recovered in 2010 from his personal files.
He admitted to a pre-meditated, long-term plot to kill a boy for insurance money. He took a boy into his home and tried to adopt him. The judge agreed to change his surname to Dannie Boy Edwards. Dannie joined the military and Ed and took out a life insurance policy on Dannie. Ed killed his his foster-son, Dannie Boy Edwards in 1996 in Ohio, USA. [3]
About 1996 he moved from Ohio to Arizona, USA.
About 2005 he moved from New Mexico, USA to a mobile home in Louisville, Kentucky, USA.
In 2009 he was arrested in Louisville, Kentucky. USA, for murder.
In 2010, he pleaded guilty to 4 murders.
In 2011 he was sentenced to death.
In 2014, Golden Door Press published "It's Me, Edward Wayne Edwards, the Serial Killer You Never Heard Of", by John A. Cameron, a former police detective in Montana, USA and cold case investigator. The book claims were "met with almost universal disdain, especially from law enforcement".
He died of natural causes on 07 April 2011 in the Corrections Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, USA, avoiding execution by lethal injection set for August 31. [4]
