According to my mother and her Cousins, Johanna Hendrika was deaf, but used a hearing aid.
Her mother died the year before she and her 6 brothers and sisters were captured and taken to Pietersburg Concentration Camp during the Anglo Boer War. She was solely responsible for those kids at the tender age of 18.
It must have been tough for the poor girl, but she would not have been ale to cope if she was not also a very strong lady.
