This man was born with the Philip Hendrik Nering Bogel in Paramaribo, Dutch Guiana, on Nov. 23, 1759. He was son of Conraed Nering and Maria Bogel. By 1764 the family were in Holland.
In April 1782 he married Georgine Lijcklama. Five children were born. Bogel/Neri was a tax collector taxes for Friesland. In 1793, he fled the country as he was accused of embezzlement (Court of Justice of Leeuwarden offered 1,000 gold ducats for his arrest).[1] This year Philip Hendrick Nering Bogel changed his name to Philipe Enrique Neri for obscure reasons..[2]
According to this article, Baron de Bastrop Phillip Nering Bogel did not leave his family behind, but brought them to America on the ship, “Brothers” which left Hamburg Germany and arrived in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.[3] Nering Bogel changed his family's names to "Bastrop". They lived in Maryland on a plantation.[4][5]....
April 1795 Neri was in Spanish Louisiana, where he said he was a Dutch nobleman. 1795-1805, he was involved in business ventures in Louisiana.[6] 1803, Louisiana was sold to the USA, and he moved to Spanish Texas. Neri established a colony between Bexar and the Trinity River, settling San Antonio, where he had a freighting business. With official influence, he became 2nd alcade in the Bexar ayuntamiento. [6]
Neri did intercede and help Moses Austin secure the Mexican Impresario grant which later Stephen F Austin administered. In 1823 settlers voted for Bastrop to the provincial deputation at Bexar Colony. [6]This then chose him to be a representative to the legislature of the new state of Coahuila and Texas in May 1824. He helped Texas obtain its Galveston port. [6]The man might have done more, if age and death had not occurred.[7] [8] Feb. 23, 1827 Death: February 23, 1827, Neri, Baron de Bastrop died on February 23, 1827 at the age of 67 in Saltillo, Mexico. [9][10] [11]Neri left no money for the funeral. His Texas co-legislators paid for the final expenses. [7]This man represented many things, but still earned respect as a diplomat and legislator, leaving his mark upon Texas history. [6]
