Susanna Sandal was baptized 8 March 1752 at Saint Paul's Church in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her parents in the record are John & Sarah Sandell.[1] Because she was baptized in Nova Scotia, it seems likely that she was born in Nova Scotia, however, her son Richard Fleming's marriage record states "Susannah Flemming of England."
Susanna married four times. Her maiden name Sandal appears on the marriage bond for her first marriage to John Juhil; subsequent marriage bonds used her married names. No record has been found for her last marriage, to John Flemming, but her burial record reads, "lawful wife of John Flemming Senior of Ketch Harbour".
Her marriage bond to Peter Martin includes her stepfather, Robert Nesbitt:
"Peter Martin Fisherman and Robert Nesbitt Blacksmith...Peter Martin Widower and Susannah Jewel Widow"
Susanna had children with Peter Martin and John Flemming, but not with her other two husbands, as far as is known.
As the administratrix for the estates of both her husband Peter Martin and her brother Robert Nesbitt Jr, Susanna handled many legal duties. Some of these were challenging; Peter Martin had debts and lawsuits to be settled.
Unlike many people of her time, Susanna wrote her own signature on legal documents rather than using an "X" for her mark. She signed using the spelling "Susanna" (even when "Susannah appears elsewhere on the document).
Susanna passed away in 1827 and was buried in Prospect, Nova Scotia.
