Elias Whilden Nettles was born on October 19, 1905, in Sumter, South Carolina, his father, Elias, was 32 and his mother, Lucy, was 21. He had two sons and one daughter with Mary Ladson Boyle Nettles. He died on February 23, 1988, in his hometown at the age of 82, and was buried there.
