Mrs. Doris Newman Persson, age 96, of Milford, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday November 19, 2004. A daughter of the late Willard Israel Newman and Harriet Elizabeth Nelson, she was born in Stonington, Deer Isle, Maine on October 18, 1908 and married the late Leonard Duple Persson on Christmas Day 1936. She was a resident of Milford for over 60 years. Mrs. Persson was an accountant at the former Arnold College of Milford and later became Bursar at the University of Bridgeport for 25 years before her retirement. In the 1930’s she was a professional singer with the Don Felix Orchestra and the William J. McEnelly Orchestra performing at such venues as the Ritz Ballroom and the Pleasure Beach Ballroom. She also sang with Frankie Carle and had her own radio show, the Doris Newman Show, which aired on WICC. A member of the National Society Magna Charta Dames, Mrs. Persson’s family line is also recognized by the Order of the Crown of Charlemagne, the Military Order of the Crusades, the Plantagenet Society, the Society of Descendants of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, and the Order of the Founders and Patriots of America. Beloved mother of Leonard Newman Persson and his wife Caryl. Devoted grandmother to Christopher Newman Persson, Deborah Lynn Persson, and Rebecca Persson Chesson and her husband Robert. Loving great grandmother of Zachary Newman Chesson and Caroline Elizabeth Chesson. Cherished sister to Ruth N. Kilpatrick and Richard W. Newman and his wife Jane. Also survived by several nieces and nephews including Robert W. Kilpatrick. She was predeceased by two brothers Arthur G. Newman and Willard L. Newman. Friends may call on Sunday November 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 3 p.m. in the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street on the Green, Milford. Interment in Kings Highway Cemetery, Milford on Monday, November 29 at 11:00 a.m..
