Biography

Caroline (Nichols) Burnett is a part of US Black heritage.

Caroline Nichols Burnett was born in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, United States of America. Her parents have not yet been identified, but her obituary said she was a descendant of John Nichols who played a significant role in Peter Stuyvesant's surrender of New York.^[1] This probably is actually referencing Richard Nicolls Esq (1624-1672), although he has no known children.

Sometime before 1850, Caroline married Cornelius J. Burnett (abt.1814-1896).^[2] Their children included:

1. Ellen (Burnett) Harris (abt.1850-abt.1912)
2. Charles Johnson Burnett (abt.1853-abt.1904)
3. Cornelius Martin Burnett (abt.1855-abt.1903)
4. Wilson J Burnett (abt.1859-1915)
5. Henrietta (Burnett) Perez (1864-1940)
6. Mary Morris (Burnett) Talbert (1866-1923)

For many years Caroline ran a boarding house in Chapel Hill, North Carolina which was associated with the college there. During that time, her husband was a barber there.^[1][3]

During the 1860's, the family moved to Oberlin, Lorain County, Ohio, so that the children could be educated at Oberlin College. There, the family had ran a barbershop as well as a boarding house on S. Main St.^[1][4]

After her husband Cornelius died in 1896, Caroline moved to Buffalo, Erie County, New York, where she lived with her daughter Mary's family.^[4][5]

Caroline died on 8 Jan 1905 at the age of 80 at the home of her daughter, Mrs Wm H (Mary) Talbert, in Buffalo, New York.^[1]
