Biography

Samuel Nicholson, son of William Nicholson and his wife, Sarah Andrews, was born on the 12th of July 1733 and baptised at St Nicholas in Rochester on the 4th of August.^[1][2] Samuel, a bricklayer, became a Freeman of Rochester on the 22nd of April 1758 by virtue of his birth from William Nicholson. ^[3]

He married Katherine Loader at St Nicholas on the 7th of November 1761. ^[4] Together they had at least ten children, Ann, William, Catherine then a Samuel who died, another Samuel, a Thomas who died then another Thomas, Sarah, John and Francis.

Samuel died on the 25th of May 1805 and was buried at St Margaret. ^[5]

" Sacred to the memory of Mr Samuel Nicholson one of the Aldermen of this city, who died the 25th day of May 1805 in the 73rd year of his age. Also Mrs Katherine Nicholson , wife of the above who died the 21st day of October 1807 in the 74th year of her age. Also Mr Thomas Nicholson, fifth son of the above Samuel and Katherine Nicholson, attorney at law and deputy clerk of the peace of this county, who died the 6th day of September 1791 in the 21st year of his age. Also Mr John Nicholson sixth son of the above Samuel and Katherine Nicholson who died the 21st day of November 1810 in the 35th year of his age. Also Mr Samuel Nicholson, third son of the above Samuel and Katherine Nicholson one of the aldermen of this city who died on the 22nd day of October 1833 in the 67th year of his age." ^[6]

Probate was granted on his estate on the 10th of June 1805. ^[7]
