Josephus Nijs (1746 - 1815)

Biography

Josephus was born in 1746. ^[1]

In 1771 he married Anna Maria Mees ^[2]

In 1795 after the death of Anna Maria Mees in 1792 he married Maria Steeno. ^[3]

He passed away in 1815. ^{[4] [5]}

Last Name variation and pronunciation

• In the Baptism Certificate ^[1] the Last Name is written as "Nijs". The "N" is clearly capitalized which is not always the case in other handwritten acts relate to this last name. The "ij" is written in one stroke as is usual in handwritten texts, the ".." on top of the letter is missing as is also common.
  • Note: "ij" has a different pronunciation then "y" ^[6]
• In the Marriage Certificate of Josephus and Anna Maria Mees ^[2] we see the same writing of the Last Name.
• In the Baptism Certificate of Anna Nijs, Maria Catharina Nijs and Maria Joanna Nijs the first three children of Josephus and Anna Maria Mees we see the same writing of the Last Name.
• In the Baptism Certificate of Petrus Nijs, Joannes Baptista Nijs and Anna Maria Nijs, the next three children of Josephus and Anna Maria Mees, we see "Neijs" where an "e" has been inserted between the "N" and the "ij". We can never be sure why the priest added the extra "e". In some other acts we see the "N" written with a flourish which might later be interpreted as an "e", however this does not seem to be the case here.
• In the Baptism Certificate of Anna Maria Nijs and Anna Maria Theresia Nijs, the last two children of Josephus and Anna Maria Mees, we are back to "Nijs".
• In the Marriage Certificate of Josephus and Maria Steeno ^[3] we find again "Nijs".
• In the Baptism Certificate of Guilielmus Nijs, Henricus Nijs and Barbe Nijs, children of Josephus and Maria Steeno we also find "Nijs".
