"Poverty Amidst Abundance - A Problem for Labor a Century Ago"
It could and did happen that the unwary found themselves hopelessly in debt to the company for which they had the dubious pleasure of working.
A case in point was that of Matthias Noll, a gardener and handyman, who was in the personal employ of George W. Scranton from Feb. 1, 1857, to Dec. 1, 1859, a total of 34 months.
In return for his service which was valued at $20 a month, Noll was privileged to rent a home from the Lackawanna Iron and Coal Co. and to obtain unlimited credit from the same company's store. It was a happy existence, a gentlemanly occupation, and rewarding in the status that it conferred both upon the employe and his family.
Whereas others less fortunate found themselves out of work in the aftermath of the Panic (Depression) of 1857, the Nolls suffered little inconvenience for their breadwinner was assured of work.
Then on Nov. 1, 1859, the Idyll came to an abrupt end. On that day, the Company Store Division of the Lackawanna Iron and Coal Co. forwarded to Matthias Noll a bill asking for payment of $348.71 in settlement of his account. [19]
