Biography

John was born 11 Oct 1786, in Nansemond County, Virginia. He was the son of Henry Norfleet and Elizabeth Everett Norfleet. John Norfleet's Bible recorded the first marriage of John to Catherine (last name unknown) on 1 Jun 1809, when John was 23 years of age. John and Catherine had eight children: Elizabeth, Henry, John, Eliza Ann, Mary Ann, Everett, Cerina, and James. Catherine died about 1848. John married his second wife, Catherine Watson 10 Sep 1855, when he was 70 years old.

John Norfleet served two tours of duty in the War of 1812 as a private with the Virginia militia. He shows up on Virginia tax rolls owning land in Nansemond County, Virginia in 1812.

John and his first wife Catherine # 1 moved to Pulaski County, Kentucky in 1820, where two Norfleet uncles had previously settled. He acquired 118 acres on White Oak Creek.

John Norfleet died 19 Apr 1873 in Pulaski County, Kentucky.

  • Marriage record of Edward McKaughan and Eliz. Ann Norfleet, 8/15/1838, recorded in Pulaski County, KY, says John Norfleet, father, gave consent to the marriage. The Will of John Norfleet, entered into court records 25-Apr-1873, lists property he owned by Forbush Creek and west of main road leading from Robertsport to Harrison. John Norfleet leaves the land to sons Everett and James M. Norfleet. Specific personal property is left to a daughter Serena Vaughn. Granddaughters bequeathed personal property are Polly Jane Roverts and Polly Jane Roberts. The balance of his estate is divided equally between his lawful heirs: Henry Norfleet, John O. Norfleet, James M. Norfleet, the heirs of Elizabeth Roberts (deceased), Serena Vaughn, Eliza. McCaughan and Mary McKinney's two children.
