Numbering discrepancy: There was some family squabbling in the 1500s over the title "Earl of Thomond" which is well explained on the various Wikipedia pages referenced here:[1]
His great-uncle Murrough[2] (brother of his grandfather Conor) was "1st Earl of Thomond" and "Last King of Thomond"[3] based on tanistry, with the agreement that his nephew Donough would assume the title of 2nd Earl upon Murrough's death
Donough (this Conor's father) was 2nd Earl
This Conor was 3rd Earl (after much family conflict with a paternal uncle Donnell[4] who wished to have the title)
This Conor's son Donough was 4th Earl
Conchobar ‘Long Nailed’ O'Brien, Third Earl of Thomond. Lord Ibrackan. Born ca 1535. Died 1591, Ennis, Clare.
1563: "In 1563 Mount Ievers, or 'Ballyarrelee' [also Ballyarrilla], was under the control of Conor O'Brien, 3rd Earl of Thomond.[6]
1568: Had possession of the lands of Roscrea Friary in County Tipperary, bordering on County Offaly.
"Conor ... was succeeded by his eldest son Donough, who later became President of Munster, and was known as the “Great Earl”. Conor ... married secondly Una, daughter of Turlogh Mac-i-Brien-Ara, by whom he had issue three sons, Donough his heir, Teige, and Daniel who was knighted and in AD. 1662 created Viscount Clare by Charles II some years after the Restoration ; he also, had three daughters, Honora first wife of Thomas Fitzmaurice, 18th, Lord Kerry ; Margaret, second wife of James Butler, second Lord Dunboyne ; and Mary, wife of Turlogh Roe MacMahon of Corcobaskin."[7]
