Biography

"A story (apochryphal or not) has been handed down through the John OBRISTs. There were said to be seven John OBRISTS in a row. Handed down to each succeeding John was a topaz stone supposedly taken from the crown of a King of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the early days the OBRISTS were from Hungary, and were called PREST. One descendant was angered by the Monarchy and stole the topaz from the crown. Mattie DUFFY OBRIST passed the precious stone to her son, John William, who in turn gave it to his son, John W. OBRIST, Jr. When there was a fire in John Jr.'s house in Dexter, Missouri, sometime in the late 1950's, the stone was lost or destroyed. That John OBRIST, b. 6 Jan. 1925, was the last in the line of our John OBRISTS."
