Jan 21 1898 Santa Barbara Press?
Tuesday word was received at the Press office that Milton Ogan, the fourteen year old son of James Ogan of Carpinteria, had been accidentally shot and that the wound would in all probability prove fatal. It appears that Mr. Ogan and son had gone in the afternoon to the hills beyond the Fithian ranch in quest of wild pigeons. The father was leading the way up a grade, the boy following some distance behind, when Mr. Ogan heard the repost or a gun and wondered what the boy was shooting at. Hurrying back he saw the boy lying face downward upon the ground and upon turning him over discovered that the full charge of shot had entered the right jaw, passing upward through the cheek and tearing out the right eye. When Mr. Ogan spoke to his son and asked him if he knew him the boy replied, “Yes if I could see you.” Mr. Ogan thought he saw brain tissue oozing from the eye socket and binding the boys head in a sack, started at once for help. It was dark when John Ogan, Jas. Crawford, Mr. Peister, and a Mexican started with lanterns, after the boy, whose father was completely exhausted and could not return. They returned with the unfortunate sufferer about 9 p.m. just as rain set in. Medical aid was summoned and everything that could be was done to relieve the sufferer but no hope was given for his recovery. He was reading the newspaper with part of his head blown off. He died at home in the evening.
