Bethwell Allan Ogot is a historian from Kenyan. He specialised in African history, research methods and theory.[1]
Bethwell Allan Ogot was born on 3 Aug 1929 at Luanda, Gem Location, Siaya county, Nyanza Province, Kenya. He was descended from a famous Luo ruling clan[1][2]
Bethwell was first a teacher of mathematics at several schools in Kenya. In 1955, he went to St Andrew's University in Scotland, where he enrolled for post-graduate studies in mathematics, philosophy and history. During this period his interest in African history developed, and he switched to obtain a master's degree in European history in 1959.[2]
He married Grace Emily Akinyi in 1959.[1]
In Aug 1959, Mr B A Ogot, born 3 Aug 1929, Kenyan, arrived at London, England from Mombasa, Kenya. He was listed as married, and heading to St Andrews, Fife as a teacher.[3]
In 1964, he joined the University College Nairobi, where he taught and wrote about African history. In 1984, he became professor of history at Kenyatta University.[2] Bethwell served as Chancellor of Moi University, Eldoret, up to 2013.[1]
