Biography

1776 Project
Private Ebenezer Olmstead served with Dutchess County New York Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Ebenezer Olmstead is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A086277.

Ebenezer Olmstead was born in Ridgefield, Connecticut the son of Nathan and Eunice (Smith) Olmstead.

He served in the Revolutionary War.

He married Betsey Sherwood and they had three children:

  1. Ebenezer, b. 1770, d. 1838
  2. William Sweet, 1776, d. 1846
  3. Nathan, d. 1836

The family farmed in the Town of Southeast, Dutchess County, New York. Southeast was an original town in Dutchess County. It was the "South East" portion of the county and boarding Connecticut to the east. The Town was included in the portion of Dutchess County that became Putnam County in 1812.

Ebenezer died 14 March 1804. His burial site has not been identified.

Research Notes

From 1912 genealogy: (1) Rev war story on p.203 of 1912 genealogy doesn't seem to match him (it doesn't; it applies to ...; (2) p.501 indicates Betsy was second wife -- some confusion as it may be her 2nd marriage and his first.

Steesy file CR-B-15 (information from John Baldwin) believes his first wife was a Sweet and wonders if the children were by 1st or 2nd wife.

As with all of the family name in Connecticut, records exist as both Olmstead and Olmsted. This family line is primarily found as Olmstead, with the "a."
