Biography

Born 5 Oct 1869 in Ritchie County, West Virginia, United States.[1]

1869/1870 Charles' family moves from Virginia to Nebraska probably sometime between the end of 1869 and the beginning of 1870. His mother's obituary mentions them moving to Saunders County, Nebraska in 1871, but they were already in Cass County, Nebraska Jul 1970[2]

27 Jul 1870 Charles is listed as a farm laborer's son, living with his parents and four siblings in Eight Mile Grove, Cass County, Nebraska.[3] His family dosen't own real estate yet and they share their home with two young men (probably brothers, 18 and 12 years old) from Ohio, who are also farm laborers.

Apr 1930 Charles is listed as the fairground caretaker in Manchester Precinct, Boone, Nebraska.[9] There is a lot of false information about Charles in this census and I almost didn't find him, but his name and job match the information of his obituary. So I am confident it is him.

Croff Orndorf dies suddenly

Neighbor Calling at His Home Finds His Lifeless Body in Chair Monday

When Elmer Harder called at Crof Orndorff's home at the fairgrounds Monday afternoon he found Mr Orndorff's lifeless body seated in his chair. Mr. Orndorff had been at Mr. Harder's place in the forenoon and had told Mr. Harder that he would come over after dinner and help him unload some straw. When he did not come, Mr. Harder went over to the Orndorff home which is just a little distance away to see if he was coming over. A physician was summoned and it was found that life was extinct. He had apparently not eaten any dinner. Charles Crofford Orndorff was born October 5th, 1869 in Richie County, Virginia and departed this life February 13th, 1933, aged 63 years, 4 months and 10 days. He leaves to mourn his passing, two brothers and three sisters, Morgan of North Bend; John of Woodland, California; Mrs. O. W. Dixon of North Bend; Mrs. C. S. Crabtree of Grand Island and Mrs. A. R. Barnes of Loretto and other relatives. Mr. Orndorff had been employed for several years as caretaker at the fairgrounds, living in a little house on the grounds. Funeral services were held at the J. Hess Undertaking parlors, Wednesday afternoon, with Rev. Jos. Stopford in charge. Interment was made at Petersburg.
