Gertrude Oressa Oxley was born on May 13th 1886 in River Philip, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. She is the daughter of Richard Thompson Oxley and Frances Oressa Carter.
Canada Census 1901 shows Thompson Oxley (b 7 Dec 1832, age 67) and wife Frances Oxley [nee Carter] (b 5 Jul 1845, age 55) [1] with daughter, Gertrude Oxley (b 13 May 1886, age 16). [2]
Gertrude was educated at Pictou Academy, Mount Allison University, and later took post-graduate work at the University of California. For several years, she was Lady Principal of Columbian College, New Westminster, British Columbia. In 1920, she was appointed teacher of Mathematics, Girl's High School, Montreal, from which she retired. [3]
Gertrude Orissa Oxley died 1 month, 14 days after being moved to the Halifax Infirmary, Halifax, Nova Scotia on March 14th 45. Her cause of death was carcinoma of the breast due to metastasis of the lungs. Her birthplace was River Philip, Nova Scotia, and her date of birth was May 13, 1885. Her parents were Ira Thompson Oxley and Francis Carter. Gertrude did not marry. Gertrude's brother-in-law, H T Smith was the informant on the death certificate. Gertrude was buried in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia on March 16th 1945. [4]
