Biography

Oneca Garcés de Pamplona, was mentioned in the Códice de Roda as the daughter of Garcia Iñiguez, King of Pamplona, and the wife of Aznar II Galíndez, Count of Aragón.^[1]

"Garsea Enneconis ... genuit ... domna Onneca qui fuit uxor de Asnari Galindones de Aragone"^[2]

Her mother is not named in the Códice de Roda but it is likely to be Garcia Iñiguez's first wife Urraca, though her parentage is unknown. Oneca's birth date is estimated to be circa 845.^[1]

As mentioned she married about 860, Aznar Galíndez, the son of Galindo I Aznárez, Count of Aragón. Aznar II succeeded his father as Count in 867.^[3]

They had issue;

1. Galindo II Aznárez, born circa 870, succeeded his father as Count of Aragon;^[3]
2. García Aznárez, who is named in the Códice de Roda (as Garsea Asnari),^[4] but of whom nothing more is known^[3]
3. Sancha Aznárez, born circa 875, married Muhammad Al Tawill, King of Huesca, and had issue^[3]

Aznar II Galíndez died in 893 but when Oneca died appears to be unknown. ^[3]

Possible other marriage

The marriages of Oneca Fortún, the daughter Fortún Garcés, King of Pamplona, and the niece of this Oneca Garcés are problematic. The Códice de Roda names her first husband as her first cousin, Aznar Sánchez de Larraun, and second husband as Abdallah I, emir de Córdoba, having had issue with both.^[5]

However this has chronological issues, as her daughters with Aznar Sánchez de Larraun are known to be active well into the 10th century. The most common theory to explain this problem, is that the marriages of Oneca Fortún have been reversed in the Códice de Roda and she married Abdallah I, emir de Córdoba as her first husband, and then secondly, her cousin, Aznar Sánchez de Larraun.^[6] However although this helps explain the chronological problems with her children with Aznar Sánchez de Larraun, there are still some issues with the chronology of her Islamic descendants.

The other theory is that it is Oneca Garcés, who was actually the wife of Abdallah I, emir de Córdoba and the grandmother of Abd al-Rahman III, caliph of Cordoba.^[7]

Date she died

A number of online sources give the date she died as the year 931^[8] but it seems unlikely she would live into her eighties in this time period, and it may be confusing her with other woman in this family.
