Biography

John Parkes was born about 1791 at Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, England according to census records. His parents are uncertain.

John married his wife Hannah some time before 1824. Several online family trees show them as the John Parkes and Hannah Hill who married on 4 September 1814 at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire,[1] but there is insufficient evidence to confirm that. There were several other marriages between a John Parkes and a Hannah in the area in 1809.

John and his wife Hannah had at least five children at Dudley, Worcestershire between 1824 and 1837. They probably had other children and there are multiple records of children baptised in the area with parents John and Hannah but insufficient evidence to link them to this family.

In the 1841 census, John Parkes was age 45 living at Mamble, Dudley, Staffordshire with his wife Hannah Parkes (40), children Elizabeth Parkes (18), Thomas Parkes (15), James Parkes (12), Mary Parkes (10), William Parkes (4). Occupation Nailor.[2]

In the 1851 census, John Parkes was age 60 living at Mamble, Dudley, Staffordshire with his wife Hannah Parkes (54), children Mary Parkes (20), William Parkes (14), Sarah Parkes [Mary's daughter] (2 months). Also two lodgers William Davies (60), Emanuel Churchill (20). Occupation Nailor.[3]

John's wife Hannah died in 1858.

In the 1861 census, John Parkes was age 70, widowed, living at Oakeywell Street, Dudley, Staffordshire with his daughter Mary Ann Onions (30), her husband Thomas Onions (31) and children. Occupation Nail Maker.[4]

John Parkes died in 1862 age 72 at Dudley. He was buried on 18 May 1862 at St John, Dudley.[5][6]

Research Notes

He might have been the John Parkes baptised on 19 Apr 1793 at Rowley Regis to John and Sarah Parkes.[7] However there were three other John Parkes baptised at Rowley Regis in 1794 and 1795 and he might have been one of them.
