Biography

John Holderman Patty was born on his parents farm in Miami County, Ohio on Christmas Eve of 1844.

He appears in the Earlham College catalogue of 1863-1864 as a freshman.[1]

He married Margery (Margaret) Stiddom (Steddom), daughter of Elijah, on 18 Mar 1868 at Warren County, Ohio.[2][3] Whether the Stiddom family is related to the Steddom family of his father's second wife is not presently known but a brief look at published genealogy (not verified) shows that they may be related.

In 1870, the family is found in Pleasant Hill, Miami County, Ohio with John's occupation listed as "fruit tree dealer" and a daughter, Josephine, age one along with an 11 year old boy John Dison (relationship unknown) and a domestic servant.[4] The marriage to Margery did not last and she married a second time to Sylvester Rogers in 1883.[5] When John became a physician, a phrenologist to be precise, is uncertain nor do we know where he trained.

Images of a J H Patty said to be from Louisville, Kentucky in 1877 are found in the world of online genealogy but do not appear definitively linked to the subject of this profile though the man resembles the 1885 advertising in Kansas.

In the 1880 US Census a J H Patty, physician, family is living in Carroll, Iowa and listed as wife is a Rachel, age 38, and children Louis (15), Clay (13), Josephine (12), Frankie (2), and a servant Rosa Walz (17). If this is the same family of a physician, some of the children are previously unseen and the origin of wife Rachel is unknown. No other 1880 census record for a physician named J H Patty has been found.

Is the 1880 census servant Rosa the woman found six years later as Prof Rose A Patty in a Topeka, Kansas advertisement? In the 1885 Kansas Census, John and Rose are living in Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas with no children listed in the household.[6] In July 1885, they are found in Hiwawatha, Kansas offering phrenology services and lectures in a tent near the court house (see advertisement right of profile).[7]

In 1886 he opened an office in Topeka, Kansas with the announcement reading, "Dr J H Patty and Prof Rose A Patty have opened a phrenological office and lecture room at 79 Kansas Avenue."[8] Press reports from his death indicate he was in Chicago about 1888 before locating in Kansas City, Missouri.

Rose died of consumption on 19 Apr 1895 at their home in Kansas City.[9] The grave marker for John and Rose (which is noted in records as a replacement) gives 29 Jan 1858 as the birth date for Rose and she is there seen as Rose Adams. Her origin cannot presently be documented. Press reports of John's death indicate Rose had a sister Miss Ray Adams.

After the death of Rose, John's practice suffered great financial hardship and he was forced to close his office. Trips out of town reportedly did not pay the costs.

John took his own life with a gunshot at his home in Kansas City on 13 Jan 1896. Initially the shot was thought to be a pan dropped after breakfast though his eight year old daughter Mary discovered the body when she went to say goodbye before leaving for school.[10] John was interred at Union Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri next to Rose.[11]
