Rev. Joseph A. Pearl was born on 18 March 1829 in Amity, Knox, Ohio, United States to Rev. James Alexander Pearl (1807-1897) and Elizabeth Berry (1808-1845).

Travel to Oregon Via the Oregon Trail

Joseph, with his wife and two young sons, travelled the Oregon Trail from Missouri with his father in a party that included a number of his siblings. They arrived in Oregon in October 1852.

Career

Joseph came with his father to Oregon in 1852. Upon arrival, he settled briefly at Jefferson, Marion Co, OR and then took up Oregon Donation Land Claim No. 1833[1] in Linn County. He was a farmer and local preacher of the Methodist church; and served in Rogue River Indian War (1855-1856).

He spent the first years of his residence in Linn County in cultivating the soil, but when Halsey was founded, he entered upon commercial pursuits, and in 1876; became a member of the firm of Black, Pearl & Co., and continued so for seven years. In 1885, he was a partner with his son James A. Pearl in the planing mill at Halsey. This establishment was set up in 1872 by Allingham & Connor, but passed through several changes of ownership. It was a concern of considerable capacity, having a variety of machinery adapted to fill the needs of the neighborhood. It was driven by steam, and had planing and matching machines, scroll saws, etc.[2]

Marriage and Family

He married Sarah H. Wiseman(1830-1908) on 25 August 1847 in Andrew County, Missouri.

Jessie (1864-1888) on 23 August 1882 in Linn County, Oregon and 3) Katie M. Standish (1870-1948) in 1891 and 4) Nancy Oats (Ball) Nicholson (1859-1929) in 1905. James died on 5 September 1928 in Bray, Siskiyou, California, United States.
  2. John Rush Pearl was born on 19 July 1851 in Missouri, United States. He married Mary Florence Weger (1853-1936) in 1873. John died on 19 July 1931 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon, United States.
  3. Orpha Jane Pearl, known as Jennie, was born on 24 January 1854 in Linn County, Oregon, United States. She married 1) Thomas Jefferson Cooper (1842-1888) on 5 August 1875 in Linn County, Oregon and 2) Robert Andrews (1853-1940) after August 1888. Jennie died on 2 June 1922 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon, United States.
  4. Silas Henry Pearl was born on 18 December 1856 in Linn County, Oregon, United States. He married Marie Adeline Leslie (1859-1929), known as Mollie and Mary, on 14 February 1880 in Linn County, Oregon. They divorced in 1889 in Douglas County, Washington. Silas died on 27 September 1931 in Redmond, King, Washington, United States.
  5. Martha Ann Pearl was born on 18 March 1858 in Linn County, Oregon, United States. She Married James Albert Miller (1851-1931) on 27 October 1875 in Linn County, Oregon. Martha died on 12 September 1897 in Linn County, Oregon, United States.
  6. Joseph William Pearl was born on 25 June 1860 in Oregon, United States. He doesn't appear to have married. Joseph died on 21 March 1939 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon, United States.
  7. Ida C. Pearl was born in June 1862 in Linn County, Oregon, United States. She married John H. Robb (1844-1903) c. 1882. Ida died on 14 July 1943 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon, United States.
