Biography

Malinda Alice was born in 1867 in Linn County, Oregon. She was the daughter of Joseph Pearl and Sarah Wiseman who had married in Missouri and then crossed the Plains by wagon train in 1852 to settle in Oregon.[1] [Note: Her death record and her Find a Grave memorial based on her death record erroneously report her year of birth as 1866. Other records support her year of birth as 1867.]

Malinda, who often went by her middle name Alice, grew up in a family of eleven siblings. Her early years were spent on the family farm in rural Linn County, Oregon. In the 1870 census Malinda (age 3) was with her parents in Peoria, Linn, Oregon.[2] By the time she was a teenager, her father had opened a dry goods mercantile. In the 1880 census Malinda (age 13), was attending school. She was living with her Joseph Pearl and Sarah (Wiseman) Pearl in Halsey, Linn, Oregon, United States.[3]

By 1897, she had moved from rural Linn County, to work in the big city of Portland, Oregon.[4] In the 1900 census A. M. Pearl [Alice Malinda] (age 33), was still single and working as a Timekeeper in a Wholesale House in Portland Ward 5, Multnomah, Oregon. She was listed as head of household in lodgings that she shared with her younger cousin Dora Wiseman, daughter Melinda's mother's brother John Wesley Wiseman.[5]

In 1903, Alice M Pearl was listed in a directory in Portland, Oregon, United States. She was working as a Forewoman for Fleischner, Mayer & Company, a merchandise house selling wholesale dry goods.[6]

As M. Alice Pearl, she married Albert H Davis in 1904 in Multnomah, Oregon, United States.[7] Alice and Albert had one child:

Doris (or Dorris) Alene Davis

In the 1910 census Alice (age 42) was the wife of Albert H Davis in Portland Ward 3, Multnomah, Oregon, United States. Albert was the Landlord of a hotel at 31 Stark Street.[8]

Alice and Albert's daughter Doris was born in 1911 when Alice was 44 years old.[9]

In the 1920 census Alice (age 51), with her husband and daughter were lodgers of Edward P Long in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon. Albert was a railroad agent for a Steam Railroad (possibly OR&N Co.) and Mr. Long was a Conductor for a Steam Railroad.[10]

In the 1930 census Alice (age 62), and her husband Albert were living at 466 Main Street in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon, United States. Albert was employed as an Investigator for the Oregon Medical Board.[11]

In the 1940 census Alice (age 73) and her husband Albert H Davis (83) were living at 1811 SE 37th Avenue in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon. They owned their home and Albert was working as an Independent Investigator. Their household include their married daughter Doris (Davis) Gibb. This record reported that Alice had a college education. [12]

Alice's husband Albert died in 1947.[13][14]

Alice died (age 86) on 9 Dec 1952 in Portland, Washington, Oregon, United States.[15] She was interred at Riverview Abbey Mausoleum and Crematory, in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.[1]
